How to Install firefox-3.5.4.tar.bz2 on Linux Ubuntu

When I posted this article, The new version of firefox is Mozilla firefox 3.5.4. This article will explain how to install firefox-3.5.4.tar.bz2 on Linux Ubuntu. Actually on Ubuntu Karmic has installed the new version of firefox, but if you don't have ubuntu karmic, You can keep to update your ubuntu browser through this article. Mozilla creates the new version of firefox with the more features that make firefox to be safe, fast, more details.

    Install firefox 3.5.4.tar.gz2 on Linux Ubuntu (Tested on Ubuntu 9.04)
  1. Download the new version of firefox then save in /home

  2. We must remove the old version of firefox,
    if You don't know the command of your firefox, We can check throught terminal:

    • Open terminal,
      type : fire then press tab to get suggestion from terminal.
      e.q.:

      $ firefox-3.0

    • remove firefox

      $ sudo apt-get remove firefox-3.0

  3. Rename plugins folder to make room for the real plugin

    $ sudo su
    # cd /home

    extract firefox to /opt

    # tar -jxvf firefox-3.5.4.tar.gz2 -C /opt
    # cd /opt
    # mv /opt/firefox/plugins/ /opt/firefox/plugins.backup

  4. Create a symbolic link plugins for firefox

    # ln -s /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/ /opt/firefox/plugins

  5. Create a new command of firefox, you can still run firefox via old shortcut of firefox

    # dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu --rename /usr/bin/firefox

  6. Make a symbolic link to the firefox, so the launcher will launch the new version of firefox

    # ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

  7. Run firefox

    # firefox

    or You can run on Applications >> Internet >> Firefox, if firefox shortcut there is no, you can create the new shortcut
    Right click >> Create Launcher
    Name : Firefox
    Command : firefox
    Comment : Web Browser of Mozilla Inc.

hello i am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS ,
when i type tar -jxvf firefox 3.5.4.tar.gz2 -C /opt in terminal it give me this error every time ,
tar: firefox: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: 3.5.4.tar.gz2: Not found in archive
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors


any IDEA ? thanks in advance :)

Ok LOL, I will try to help you:
You get problem when do the command tar -jxvf,
Sorry my good friend, It is my false,
You can't do the command tar -jxvf firefox 3.5.4.tar.gz2 -C /opt
cos
firefox 3.5.4.tar.gz2 should be firefox-3.5.4.tar.gz2

Now, You should install firefox. I have updated my article.

Or you can extract via GUI to /opt.

press Alt+F2 >> gksu nautilus

You will be a root on nautilus desktop.
you can copy and extract firefox.tar.gz2 to /opt using GUI. I am sure, you will be easier to do that via GUI.
