Make Your Linux Desktop be Awesome With Installation VGA

For getting a Linux Desktop comfort and beautiful, surely your VGA card must has installed on your linux. This article will explain how to install NVIDIA drive on linux Ubuntu or another linux that is using debian packages. You only edit in step no 3, customize to your nvidia driver.

Tested on Linux Ubuntu 9.04 and NVIDIA GeForce 200 Series.

Let's Install Driver NVIDIA on Linux Ubuntu 9.04.

  1. Download NVDIA series here, It will find automatically your NVDIA driver.

  2. If you are using Debian Lenny, please do this way. (For Ubuntu 9.04, go to step 3)
    Installing the Required Packages

The packages which are required for installing NVIDIA drivers and are not included in Debian Lenny by default are make, gcc and linux-headers-xxx. In order to install these packages, insert the first Debian installation DVD into your optical drive, open the Terminal and run the following command as root:

    # apt-get install make gcc gcc-4.1 linux-headers* -y

Note: It is assumed that you have the Debian DVD 1 as one of your software repositories, the case which is satisfied by default.

You have to ask the BASH to use the gcc version 4.1; set the CC environmental variable to use gcc-4.1:

    # cd /home/username
    # export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.1

  3. Installing NVIDIA Driver

Open the Terminal and run the following command as root to stop the gdm:

    # /etc/init.d/gdm stop

You will leave the graphical environment.

Now install the driver NVIDIA GeForce 200 Series :

    # sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.36-pkg1.run

    Follow it's instruction until finished.

  4. Restart the gdm to log in and re-enter the graphical environment.

    # gdm

Your VGA has installed, if you want to improve your ubuntu desktop, please read my article about How to make GNOME look like MAC OS on Ubuntu 9.04.
